Spring is a time of year when your options multiply. You can expect to experience the best of both Summer and Winter activities, all jam-packed into one trip! From powder days skiing the mountain peaks to lakeside activities while soaking up the vitamin D and endless trials waiting for you to explore by bike or foot, each month brings a little something special to maximize your vacation goals.

What to Look Forward to Each Month

MARCH promises powder days and sunshine! Being the snowiest month on the peaks, you can enjoy longer days shredding the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb, with the mountain open from 8:30 AM – 4 PM (February 25 – April 16), with extended access on Blackcomb Mountain from April 17 – May 22, 10 AM – 4 PM. iI's the perfect time to pack your gear and plan for the ultimate Spring Skiing getaway.

APRIL serves up longer days with soft Spring snow. Pack your sunscreen, fewer layers and enjoy bluebird days on and off the slopes, followed by sun-soaked ski après on the mountain or in the Village where the vibes are always good. If you're planning a family trip for the Easter Holidays, you can look forward to plenty of family-friendly activities to create unforgettable memories.

MAY is the month to maximize on your adventure bucket list. The list of adventures grows fast with its dual-sport days as it warms up. Although Whistler mountain closes for the Season in late April, Blackcomb remains open. Whistler offers a wide variety of riding options for all levels and tastes. Bring along your wheels or rent a bike in the Village and enjoy the Sea to Sky bike trails this Spring. By April, the snow's melted away, and you can take advantage of the tacky trails, fewer crowds, coolers days for longer rides and get some early-season trail riding in.

Be sure to keep up-to-date with the WORCA website for local trail conditions, and remember the Whistler Mountain Bike Park opening is usually mid-May.

Whistler's Summer Concert Series brings music back to the mountains and sets the stage for the return of large-scale live performances with joy front and center. Explore and Experience Whistler

The Explore and Experience summer animation programming, produced by Arts Whistler, will return to showcase art, music, wellness activities, and entertainment events every week through July and August. Programming will follow weekly themes that capture Whistler's distinct vibe while showcasing unique experiences to both locals and visitors. Whether it is listening, learning, and reflecting on Canada's history with Indigenous people while participating in a community canoe carving project at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre, or chilling out in the Village, awash in a sound bath, each week will embrace a variety of themed immersive experiences designed to inspire.

Canada Day – Week 1

Canada Day in Whistler will see the return of thoughtful opportunities for reflection, and popular events including a pancake breakfast, free yoga, all-ages entertainment and experiences along the Village Stroll, and an evening concert at Whistler Olympic Plaza. Whistler, originally known as Cwítima (Lil'wat) and Sk̲wik̲w (Squamish), is in the shared, unceded territory of the Lil'wat People and the Squamish People. As a community Whister will recognize July 1 as a time to reflect on all of Canada's history, including its past and present truths about our relationship with Indigenous peoples.

Along with performing, Chin will introduce ZADA, who he has worked closely with over the last two years, to share her neo-soul-soaked songs at her first full-band hometown show. A show made all the more special as she performs on the eve of her 19th birthday.

Thursday, July 28 - Gurdeep Pandher

Gurdeep is best known for spreading hope and positivity during the pandemic through his joy-sparking, viral Bhangra dance videos set in the wilderness of the Yukon Territory. In this unique performance on Whistler's largest stage, the Bhangra artist and educator will share his best tips on finding joy in darkness, and blend a massive interactive Bhangra lesson for the audience with his own traditional Punjabi folk-dance performance.

Thursday, August 18 - DJ Shub presents "War Club Live"

Considered to be the Godfather of PowWowStep, DJ Shub won the 2022 Juno Award this May in the Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year category and has previously won Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2014 (with A Tribe Called Red). DJ Shub will present a dynamic live show of his critically acclaimed, chart-topping electronic Indigenous album "War Club Live". 2. Less is more, which means creating one focal point per room and avoiding a situation when furniture or finishes are competing. Be careful when you mix wood furniture with wood finishes. Make sure you do not introduce too many different wood types in one space, and if you do, brake them with neutral colours like in the below picture, where the designer did a great job using whites and grey, or use the same wood all through and introduce a piece of furniture made of different materials and add some colours, in the picture below, the blue looks fantastic.

3. The importance of functionality is that remembering your place could be stunning, but you will hate it if it doesn't reflect your lifestyle! Avoid clutter! Create a visual divide between spaces, and it is essential to keep an aesthetic theme that runs through the entire area to create unity, for example, a different shade of colour or a finish. Don't feel like all your furniture must be along a wall; pulling it into a living space will create a homier feel. In addition to that, live at your place comfortably. Make it warm and inviting. If you have children or pets, look for durable finishes and furniture, easy to clean. If your furry friend is white, avoid black furniture. Use good quality washable wall paint, avoid shaggy rugs, and ensure that flooring is not slippery, especially on the stairs, kitchen, and bathroom. Make your home safe and enjoyable for everyone.

4. Scale, too big and too small mistake. Sometimes, it is good to use a big piece of furniture or art to make a statement, but only if the space allows it. Make sure that your furnishings are proportional to the size of the space. The most common mistakes when it comes to scaling are a one, and too big sofa in the conversation area, too big dining table, out of proportion to the table dining chairs, area rugs too big or too small, window drapery too short or not having enough volume.

5. Importance of lighting. Light creates more than just visual effects (image, shape, intensity, perception, contrast, etc.); it also has biological and psychological effects that can impact health and wellbeing. It is essential to pay attention when choosing to light. In general, there are four types of lighting. The first is a General Lighting, which illuminates an entire area. It is essential to choose the right temperature for general lighting; too yellow or too cold light will negatively impact the colour of the walls, furniture, and finishes. It must not be dazzling for visual comfort. That is why it is good to have a dimmer to control the brightness. The next type is Task Lighting. The task light must deliver light uniformity. An example of a task light is a bathroom vanity light, under cabinet lighting in the kitchen and your desk light. The third type is Mood Lighting, a significant part of the overall design. Mood Light fixtures are placed in conversation areas, bedrooms, above the dining table, and kitchen islands. These light fixtures can emphasize the overall design style of your place. The fourth group is the Accent Lighting. Accent lighting creates intrigue and visual excitement on an accent point. It can illuminate up to 10 times more than the surrounding lighting. It is a great design tool.

For some of us, our hearts belong in a Winter Wonderland, and nothing beats strapping on those skis and carving down snowy white slopes. If this is you, then you can be sure to enjoy skiing and riding conditions well into May.

Those who are ready to leave Winter behind and soak in the sunshine while exploring the outdoors, you'll notice the warmer temperatures in the valley quickly melt away the snow, opening up endless opportunities for Spring and Summer sports. We like to think of Spring as Whistler's 2-for-1 season. All the best of both Summer and Winter activities jam-packed into one experience!

1.Lakes, Parks & Beaches

Spring may seem a little chilli at first, but after a long cold winter, the start of Spring for most of us feels like mid-summer, with temperatures reaching in the mid-teens. And can only mean one thing; Long paddles on thawed out lakes and even longer picnic dates with our nearest and dearest while soaking in the sunshine and enjoying the many lakeside park activities.

Love to paddle? We got you! Easily rent a Kanoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard and head out onto Alta Lake. Or go on an extended river adventure with a guided tour discovering Whistler's abundant wildlife while taking in the magnificent mountain views that will surround you as you float down the River of Golden Dreams.

And if adrenalin is your game! We would suggest a heart-pumping Whitewater rafting excursion with The Adventure Group.

Picnics and lakeside activities are a great way to get the family outside and enjoying the cool, clear mountain air. Here are some of our favourite local spots:

Lakeside Park: Located at Alta Lake, it is just a short distance from the Village. Featuring sandy beaches, two docks, canoe and kayak rentals, kids play area, picnic tables, and BBQs making it the perfect spot for a day spent with the family.
Rainbow Park: Located on the west side of Whistler Valley and the far side of Alta Lake, it offers spectacular mountain views of Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb. If team sports are your entertainment choice, you can enjoy beach volleyball courts and wide-open spaces.
Lost Lake: This serene and relaxing lake set in a stunning forested park is only a short walk from Whistler Village. It is a great place to bring the family after checking out the Family Adventure Zone at the bottom of Blackcomb Mountain.

2.Exploring Whistler By Foot, Wheels & Pedals.

Spring means no more cars and many more adventures to be had by foot, wheels or pedals. As the snow gradually melts away, Whistler's Valley Trail network comes to life with walkers, runners, cyclists of all kinds, and even rollerbladers. Whatever your mode of transport is, you can be sure to enjoy some of the most picturesque locations and scenic views winding its way through Whistler, connecting various neighbourhoods, lakes, viewpoints and picnic spots.

Don't have a bike? Not to worry, you can rent a bike from various locations in the Village, including a chariot for the littlies to join you on your longer journeys.

Whistler offers many cross-country mountain biking opportunities, from XC, all-mountain, enduro and trail riding. If you love to pedal, then Whistler's the place to be. Explore easy green trails to endless technical ascents and descents through old-growth rainforest and alpine meadows.

Be sure to keep up-to-date with the WORCA website for local trail conditions, and remember the Whistler Mountain Bike Park opening is usually mid-May.

3.World-Class Golf

Enjoy the wide-open spaces and endless mountain views at any one of Whistler's four major championship golf courses dotted through the valley. Each perfect playground offers various sets of tees to give every level of golfer an ideal sense of challenge and enjoyment. The expected opening date is in May.

4.Hiking Adventures

Hiking in Whistler has to be one of the topmost loved activities to do all year round. From Winter to early Spring, locals and visitors alike are seen strapping on their snowshoes to venture out into the old-growth forest for a winter wonderland hiking experience. In contrast, the warmer temperatures in the valley make for a prime opportunity to explore the vast Valley Trail network that features over 40km of explorable terrain with beautiful views of Whistler's lakes, mountains and golf courses. Here are a couple of our favourite Spring trails:

The Lost Lake Hike offers a wide variety of well-marked easy trails starting from Whistler Village and brings you to a beautiful small lake. As you venture through the lush West Coast rainforest, you'll find yourself surrounded by breathtaking views of Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains.
The trail up to Cheakamus Lake is an all-time favourite in the Springtime, with a relatively flat hiking trail that brings you to a massive and secluded mountain-lined lake, boasting stunning views. Perfect for a family picnic with the kiddies or a comfortable backpack.

5.Black Bear Tours

If your planning to visit us in Whistler, there is no doubt that spotting one of Whistler's famous bears and cubs in their natural surroundings is on the very top of your to-do list. Venture into the wild as you travel in style in a 4x4 vehicle with Whistler Photo Safaris to bear viewing areas, feeding sites, daybeds and dens. It's important to note that although these furry friends seem to look cute and cuddly, they are wild animals and require their space. Tours typically run from April/May.

Lake Country With Elevate Vacations

The theory YOU choose how you see things has never really left me so when COVID-19 hit and brought with it strict travel restrictions, I didn’t focus on where I “couldn’t” visit but rather zoned in on where in BC I hadn’t thoroughly discovered; an opportunity to check off my provincial travel checklist!

Road trips are the best. I love a good road trip and with my father growing up in Summerland, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Thompson Okanagan. With better weather, multiple lakes, and a slower laid back pace, it doesn’t take much for me to pack up the car and travel to BC’s interior. Lake Country in November might not be on everyone’s agenda but it’s worth adding asap! The drive was beautiful, highways were quiet, leaves were the perfect shades of yellow, red, orange, and while there was a sprinkling of snow, the roads were perfect.

The journey. Five hours and literally 14 “potty” breaks later (travelling with kids!), we pulled into our Lake Country accommodation, hauled our luggage through the door, and were immediately blown away by panoramic lake views. Yes, the furnishing were beautiful, the kitchen absolutely deluxe, but that view encouraged you to ignore it all, even the kids and the dog! Well…for a few minutes at least…

Don't settle for less. Speaking of little people, having them in tow has significantly changed what I look for in a vacation rental. Prior to motherhood I would grab the cheapest rate, take a basic room with no view, basically rationalizing we didn’t plan to spend much time there anyway. But since kids, and the sleepless nights that come with them, I really want to enjoy where I stay, feel spoiled but welcomed, and having all the amenities we’re used to at home is non-negotiable. We’ll need a kitchen, require multiple bedrooms, room to play, do laundry, and also just escape it all once those nuggets go to bed. To be able to achieve all that and feel safe in a time where people are required to “stay apart” is a tough goal but one we easily accomplished on this trip.

A+ Review. With our new home getting A+ reviews from all family members, we set out to tackle the lengthy adventure list I made prior to leaving YVR (yes, I’m one of “those” people). With our dogs and toddlers in tow, we hit Rattlesnake Point, a short drive from downtown Vernon and offers incredible views, and the Kettle Valley Trestles which took a full afternoon if you include the drive but was definitely a highlight!

Time to explore. We spent afternoons at the local waterfront playground minutes from the home, hit numerous coffee shops (boys loved the kids fluffy at Triumph Coffee), spent a couple of hours shopping downtown, and even managed a winery as we jetted out of town. All this excitement as we didn’t even get out on the lake! Paddleboarding, kayaking, apple picking, lunch at Davidsons Orchards, and tastings at a few more wineries are on the list for our next visit.

What's not to love. And if all that seems a bit much or the Pandemic sticks around longer than we hope, we wouldn’t hesitate to come back simply to enjoy “staying home” at our Lake Country retreat…. Beyond being the perfect amount of space for a family or your “six,” it also offers an undercover outdoor pool table which the boys LOVED, a fire pit with ample seating overlooking the lake (smores are on our list next time!), a private dock that was easily worth the trek.… and, well, that view….!!!

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Opening Day 2020 - Tim Coleman.

I've spent hundreds of days on the trails, almost always with a stupid grin plastered all over my face. But this year has been different, hasn't it? 2020 has been a real son of a diddly, and due to the COVID-19 virus, Whistmas was postponed. Then, just a week or so ago Whistler announced it would be opening on June 29th. FREAK OUT! But then the rumours started flying. You're going to have to book a 4-hour window to ride, like booking a tee time. You're not going to be able to ride with buddies. There won't be any jump trails. Nightmares. So I'm here to report on Whistmas 2020, to tell what is actually happening in Whistler today.

Better late than never, right? I got to the bottom of the lift at about 9:15 am, which was 45 minutes before the lifts were due to start running. I'm not going to lie, as an opening day it felt a bit strange. There were folks eagerly waiting the first chair, but the energy was muted. The big SRAM booth isn't here, and there is no pump up music blaring out across the plaza. I wandered to the front of the line to see who'd be camped out for first chair.

As the time approached 10 am, and the lifts started turning, the energy increased. The first riders came down Lower A-Line to cheers from the plaza. The berms were buffed, and the first tracks were laid. Whistler Bike Park 2020 was officially underway.

The line to get tickets was probably the worst. Whistler has limited staff to sell tickets. Your best option is to buy tickets online. This won't greatly improve your wait, but if everyone buys their tickets online it'll substantially reduce the time to service each customer. So for the greater good, please purchase your tickets online before getting to the bike park. It only takes a couple minutes, and you can even fill out the waiver.

Lift lines peaked at a 20-minute wait for the Fitz chair, and no wait all day for Garbo. By the afternoon, the lines for the Fitz chair had subsided to a 10-minute wait. Creekside and Peak chair are not running. From chatting with some of the hosts the official word is Creekside Gondola and Peak Chair won't open this year, they simply don't have the staff. But the bike park is trying its best to open those chairs. It's hard to gauge how lines will be given it was a gorgeous day today, opening day, but also a working Monday.

Whistler Bike Park Trails Status. Trails-wise, everything is open except black and double black jump trails. So no Freight Train (pouting), no Crab Apple (sniffles), no A-Line (tears), and no Dirt Merchant (sobbing). Consolation prizes are that Dwayne Johnson and Lower A-line are open (thank you!). These trails are known to produce the most serious injuries, and Whistler has decided to gradually open them. Some folks have been critical saying that the hospital is empty, so this reason is bunk. But put yourself in a bike park patroller's shoes. There will be new protocols and policies for dealing with injured riders on the hill, and I think a staged approach to work out those protocols isn't a bad idea. This also aligns with the province's gradual reintroduction of risk. I'm as gutted as everyone else, but I think we just need to be patient. That aside, the trails that are open are incredible. Some of the best conditions I've ridden in the bike park. Almost all the trails have been touched up and the dirt is best described as HERO.

Relics. Maybe it's because we're always riding fancy new bikes, but what turns my head these days is cool old bikes. I love old bikes, and for some reason you always see some wonderful relics turn up to the bike park. We rarely see stuff like this on the local trails. So the bike park line is like game watching for me, and here are some of my favourites:

Mask Game. Who wore it best!? I went with the gucci, coffee shop spec, reusable cotton jobby. Whistler was handing out surgical types. Some pulled out ski masks. Others went with the buff. What would your mask setup be? I'm not convinced on the best solution, so please comment on your preferred solution in the comments. What I will say is pulling the mask off at the top, and taking that first breath of fresh mountain air is extra good ... like really good. Bring a fun mask up with you and sport some style. It's fun checking out everyone's mouth covering solutions in the line.

Pricing. From looking at online discussions to chats with friends the pricing for the bike park this year has been .... errrr ... contentious. The price for a season pass is the same this year as last year, and day tickets are now $80. Given that less of the park is open, for shorter hours, and with 7 weeks of the season missing, some folks were expecting discounted prices. That seems like reasonable logic until you put yourself in Whistler's shoes. Whistler / Vail have had to spend a ton of time and effort working out COVID protocols and policies. On top of that Whistler is struggling to find staff, in and out of the bike park. But yet the bike park wants to offer as good a product as years previous. Having a number of folks integral with the bike park I don't get the sense that the pricing is a money grab in any way. The people running the bike park are passionate about the bike park, and excited for it to open. To drive this point there is no active marketing for the bike park at the moment, they're wanting to open the bike park because they know how important it is to the local community. Is it expensive? Absolutely. But there is no other place I'd rather ride a bike. Folks easily spend $100 a day to go skiing, for the same number of hours, and I'd argue the Whistler Bike Park is more fun!

Pro Tips

Lift Tickets: buy online, and try to get to the ticket line as early as possible. It'll be a long wait at 10 am.

Get there early: especially if you're buying a day ticket. Ticket line opens at 9am. Get your ticket, have a coffee, and get some runs in early.

Bring a rad mask: and hopefully cut down on the disposable waste of the one time use masks.

Water: I couldn't find any water fountains on the hill or at the bottom of the lift. So bring a water bottle, you can fill up at the top and bottom, and stay hydrated.

All said it just feels really good to ride a chair lift, and ride these trails with some friends. The masks are a bit weird at first, but I quickly got used to mine. The tan lines are going to be wild this year! The limited trails is a bummer, but Whistler is working to open everything as quickly as possible. While Whistmas 2020 won't go down as the best ever, I had a ton of fun today.
